No Zulu King In 2021: Future Of Annual Ball Undecided

For the first time in over four decades, Zulu will not parade through the streets of New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club announced on Thursday that it will not elect a King Zulu or characters for Mardi Gras 2021. Additionally, it will make the final decision in the next few weeks on whether to hold the 2021 Ball.

"The science tells us that Mardi Gras 2020 was likely a super spreader that contributed to the pain that the world is experiencing," the krewe said in a statement. "We wholeheartedly agree that we should not do that again."

The Zulu Coronation Ball usually attracts 17,000 guests, but the pandemic makes this kind of gathering impossible to hold. Though disappointing, the krewe said it will do what is necessary to ensure the safety of its members and guests.

As for the tradition of Mardi Gras celebrations in the city, the krewe agrees with New Orleans' decision to cancel parades for the upcoming season and look forward to contributing in whatever way is safest to do so.

"While none of us like this situation, we fully accept the science and support the decision to forego parades for February 2021," the statement continued. "Recognizing our importance to Mardi Gras, we assure the world of our recognizable participation and presence in the 2021 celebration. "However, the virus forces New Orleans to celebrate this magnificent tradition, Zulu will be there, in whatever manner that we can safely do so."
