New Orleans is under a nightly curfew for the foreseeable future.

On Tuesday (August 31), Mayor LaToya Cantrell signed an executive order mandating a citywide curfew for all residents from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. each day. The curfew, which was effective immediately, will be in place until further notice. The curfew does not apply to emergency and relief works within the city.

According to Mayor Cantrell's proclamation, the curfew was initiated as "the City of New Orleans has a compelling interest in protecting the public health, safety and welfare of citizens, relief workers and other persons and property within its borders" during the state of emergency declared in the city and the entire state of Louisiana.

Cantrell and New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said officers will enforce the new curfew, per FOX 8 Live. Additionally, authorities with the Louisiana State Police and Louisiana National Guard will assist NOPD for the anti-looting policy.

Most of New Orleans is still without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which made landfall as a dangerous Category 4 storm on Sunday (August 29). Crews are slowly working to restore power to the city, with some neighborhoods getting power back on Wednesday, but it could still take weeks for electricity to return to all of New Orleans.
