The operators of an important storm surge barrier say they're ready for the start of hurricane season.

On Thursday, they inspected the West Closure Complex in Belle Chasse by running it at full capacity for an hour.

The system is made up of sector gates, floodgates, and a large pumping station, among other components.

It's designed to protect the west bank of Jefferson, Orleans, and Plaquemines Parishes from storm surge.

Hurricane season starts on June 1.
