Tax Day Is Coming, and the IRS Is Still Watching

The Internal Revenue Service is not to be played with. The deadline to file your income taxes is April 15, which is just around the corner. While some people are thinking about skipping it this year, that is not a smart move. A new survey by a consumer credit resource found that many Americans are feeling bold about their taxes, but their confidence may be risky.

The survey says that 24% of Americans are less worried about making mistakes on their tax returns because of recent government changes. A new department called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has cut back staff at the IRS, and people think this means their tax returns might not be reviewed as closely. Even more surprising, 17 percent of people surveyed said they might not file their taxes at all, because they believe there are not enough workers left at the IRS to audit them.

But experts are warning against this way of thinking. A spokesperson from Credit Karma said clearly, “You definitely don’t want to mess with the IRS.” No matter what you’ve heard, it is still your responsibility to file and report your taxes correctly. The IRS might be quieter this year, but they are still watching.
